1920s Narrative Gold Embroidered Dress

1920s Narrative Gold Embroidered Dress

Stunning 1920s dress with the most incredible embroidery!! The motifs appear to be mid-to-east asian in inspiration, though this piece was certainly made for the Western market. Features images of huts, flowers, foliage, birds, bridges, and figures on horseback. The stitching is so intricate and gorgeous, all done in gold bullion thread with real metal fibers that shine and shimmer in the light. Breathtaking. Dress silhouette is loose and boxy in the classic 1920s style, with dropped waist and soft pleating from waist up bodice. Large 3d fabric flower at left hip with gold lame accents. Subtle pleating from hip as well, which gives a faux sarong effect. The back features a billowy cape in ecru silk. The dress is a lovely faintly tea-stained color. Beautifully aged. Includes original attached silk underdress.

Dropped waist (19" from shoulder): 35"
Length: 53"

Condition: Great. Presents beautifully and a rare and very special piece. A trail of brown spots down the bodice and another group at right hip. I have not attempted to clean. They look like they would at least lighten significantly if not disappear in a professional cleaning. Some faint discoloration on back cape. Some loose and missing stitches to the embroidery on the shoulders, and perhaps a couple spots elsewhere. The underdress/slip includes a tulle net straps/decolletage and this net area is shredded. The rest of the slip is intact, but has a couple tiny spots. Could be removed altogether and worn with your own slip, or new ribbon straps could be added. Wear and small holes at shoulders. Still wearable!
